There are a few key factors that influence how easily residents and businesses can ‘Get Connected’. These are Connectivity, Affordability, and Capability.
The first is Connectivity. This refers to the physical ability to connect to the internet or mobile networks across the Shire. Most homes and businesses in Golden Plains have options available, but the type of connection can vary. We explain your internet connection possibilities here and your mobile device possibilities here.
Another exciting development is the Golden Plains Shire’s Smart Shires Network, which uses LoRaWAN technology. LoRaWAN is a low-power, long-range wireless network designed for smart devices and sensors. It’s perfect for applications like water monitoring, soil moisture tracking, and environmental data collection. This network is helping farmers, businesses, and community services adopt smart solutions that improve efficiency, sustainability, and decision-making. More information is here.
The second factor is Affordability—being able to pay for the service. Internet and mobile prices are set nationally, so council has very little control over costs. However, we’re working to improve access through a Digital Hub at the Smythesdale Council Offices, where the public can use free internet services. More details are available here.
The third factor is Capability. Even if a connection is available and affordable, people still need the skills to use it effectively. To help build technical confidence for residents and business owners, we’ve gathered resources you can access here.
