Council has awarded a contract to Bild Infrastructure Pty Ltd for significant road widening and safety works on Slate Quarry Road in Meredith.

Slate Quarry Road's 800-metre single-lane stretch will undergo transformation into a two-lane sealed road, enhancing its suitability for heavy vehicles. The works also include the installation of new box culverts along Ballan-Meredith Road, Grant Street and Slate Quarry Road to improve drainage, including upgrades to private driveway culverts affected by improvement works.

Works will improve the intersection of Slate Quarry Road with Ballan-Meredith Road and Watson Street, and a 63-metre-long concrete kerb will be constructed at the Ballan-Meredith Road intersection.

The $787,000 project is funded under the Federal Government’s Local Roads Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program Phase 4.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham said the works will improve safety and increase the level of service for all road users.

“The Slate Quarry Road bridge was recently upgraded to a two-lane bridge with unrestricted access, and improvements to the remainder of Slate Quarry Road will make travelling on Slate Quarry Road a safer and more comfortable experience for all motorists,” Cr Cunningham said.

“Council acknowledges that road maintenance, upgrades and repairs are one of the most important issues in Golden Plains Shire and we are committed to ensuring the Shire’s road network is maintained and upgraded at every opportunity.

“We are grateful for the ongoing funding support from the Federal Government’s LRCI Program for this and other road projects in Golden Plains.”

On site road works at Slate Quarry Road are expected to begin in late December 2023 and be completed by mid-March 2024.
