Golden Plains Shire Council is encouraging its senior community to get out and about during the 2022 Victorian Seniors Festival with a range of events on offer for Golden Plains residents to enjoy throughout the month of October.

The Victorian Seniors Festival is a state-wide festival for Victorians over 60 focusing on providing fun and good times. This year marks the return of in person events following COVID-19, as well as the 40-year anniversary of the festival.

Council has partnered with the Victorian Seniors Festival and local organisations and community groups to provide a calendar of events for local seniors, with free or low-cost events and activities tak-ing place across the Shire.

Council’s Positive Ageing team have developed a timetable of local events on offer across Golden Plains with opportunities for participants to get active with walking groups, soft tennis, or the Steady Feet over 60s exercise program; get out and about with trips to the Geelong Art Gallery as well as a Mystery Outing; and engage with other seniors in the Shire at weekly sewing and quilters groups or over delicious morning teas and lunches while enjoying music, games and other activities.

As part of the calendar of events, Council will be hosting two celebrations open to all seniors in the Shire:

  • Tuesday 4 October from 11am to 1pm: International Day for Older Persons Celebration at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre, 25-27 High Street, Bannockburn
  • Friday 7 October from 10am to 12.30pm: Ageism Awareness Day Celebration and EveryAGE Counts Campaign launch at the Lethbridge Cricket Club, 8 Stephenson St, Lethbridge

The International Day for Older Persons celebration will acknowledge the theme of the day; ‘Resilience of Women Over the Years’, by screening a short interview with Golden Plains women for guests includ-ing Councillor’s and residents. The Ageism Awareness Day will launch EveryAGE Counts, an advocacy campaign aimed at tackling ageism against older Australians, followed by an afternoon of games. Light lunch, tea and coffee will be provided at both events.

Golden Plains Shire Council Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble said the return of the Victorian Seniors Festival to Golden Plains is an exciting step for the senior community following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am delighted to see the return of the Seniors Festival after what has been a particularly challenging few years for seniors in Golden Plains. There is a wide range of activities on offer across the Shire as part of the 2022 Victorian Seniors Festival, with events to suit a broad cross-section of our senior community and offering ample opportunity for social interaction, skill development, activity and fun.

“Council is committed to ensuring our older residents are able to age well and remain connected. I en-courage all Golden Plains residents over 60 to get involved and make the most of the events on offer throughout October, and the range of programs and services to be provided by Council’s Active Ageing & Inclusion team in the future.”

Bookings are essential. Transport is available for Council facilitated events. To view the full calendar of events, visit: goldenplains.vic.gov.au.
