A statement from Cr Owen Sharkey Mayor, Golden Plains Shire.
Response to the Victorian Government’s Emergency Services and Volunteers Fund (ESVF) levy.

Council has taken careful note of the State Government’s introduction of the Victorian Government’s new Emergency Services and Volunteers Fund (ESVF) and is deeply disappointed and concerned by the passing of the legislation through the State Parliament late last week.

Council is concerned about the potential for increased financial hardship across our Shire and the potential erosion of community resilience.

Over the past few months, we have undertaken a substantial amount of work to represent our community’s interest. In February, Council formally passed a resolution clearly outlining our position on this matter. Former Acting Mayor Cr Helena Kirby and the Interim CEO were part of a delegation with other nearby councils that advocated directly to the Greens just two weeks ago.

The former Acting Mayor also participated in a community rally to oppose the ESVF earlier this month, and last Friday Council voted in favour of a motion at the MAV State Council meeting to condemn the levy. Council also was part of Rural Councils Victoria’s advocacy efforts against the legislation.

Council remains committed to continuing to advocate on this issue on behalf of our community.
