Golden Plains Shire Council has been named the winner of the Outstanding Small Rural Council Initiative award at the LGPro Awards for Excellence for the Inverleigh Active Youth Space.

The LGPro Awards for Excellence celebrate the outstanding achievements of individuals and teams across local government in Victoria, recognising innovation, leadership and community impact.

This award highlights the Shire’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive, healthy and connected communities through the delivery of high-quality public infrastructure. Developed in direct response to community feedback and shaped through strong youth engagement, the Inverleigh Active Youth Space provides a safe, contemporary destination for recreation, social connection and physical activity.

The Inverleigh Active Youth Space is a community-driven initiative that has transformed the Yerram Yaluk Bun Play Space into a dynamic and accessible hub for active recreation. The revitalised space features a pump track, skate elements, basketball facilities, multi-use recreation areas and enhanced landscaping.

Beyond its physical upgrades, the project has created meaningful opportunities for young people to connect, build a sense of belonging and engage in positive recreational activities close to home.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey said this award reinforces Golden Plains Shire’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that responds to community needs and delivers lasting benefits for current and future generations.

This award is a testament to what can be achieved when Council and community work together with a shared purpose. This achievement would not have been possible without the passion and input of the Inverleigh community, who helped shape the vision and advocate for this important project

I would also like to acknowledge Council’s Recreation and Community Infrastructure team for their dedication and hard work in bringing this space to life. As we continue our advocacy in the lead up to this year’s State Election, achievements like the Inverleigh Active Youth Space remind us why this work matters

This $2.3 million project was funded by $700,000 from the Australian Government, $1.48 million from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, $150,000 from Golden Plains Shire Council and $25,000 from the Inverleigh Progress Association.

Council would like to sincerely thank the Inverleigh Progress Association for its advocacy, local insight and ongoing commitment throughout the project. The Association’s input, enthusiasm and support were invaluable in helping shape this exciting community space.
