Golden Plains Shire Council has been successful in obtaining $2 million from the Victorian Government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program. This initiative is designed to enhance road safety on Council-managed roads, intersections and precincts.

Council was successful in receiving funding for the following six projects:

  • Project 1: Milton Street & Burns Street, Bannockburn – Raised pedestrian crossings.
  • Project 2: Heales Street and Becker Street, Smythesdale – Raised pedestrian crossings.
  • Project 3: East Street, Inverleigh – Raised pedestrian crossing.
  • Project 4: Moreillon Boulevard, Bannockburn – Raised pedestrian crossing.
  • Project 5:  Racecourse Road and Ross Creek-Haddon Road, Haddon – Raised pedestrian crossings and speed limit reduction.
  • Project 6: Lacy Road & Sebastopol-Smythesdale Road, Ross Creek – Intersection upgrade.

These approved projects have advanced through the initial concept and planning stage, and Council will issue tenders for the works, with timelines for construction to be established.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey said the road safety projects aimed to enhance safety for all pedestrians and road users.

“Council is pleased to have received this Victorian Government funding to help us plan and implement road safety initiatives to reduce road trauma and support a thriving community,” Cr Sharkey said.

“We look forward to getting these projects underway with the aim of enhancing safety for all residents, young people, rate payers, businesses and road users.”

The Victorian Government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program is a $210 million dollar program that runs to June 2027. The program fosters a collaborative approach bringing together local councils, the Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) to jointly identify, plan, develop and deliver crucial road safety improvements across the state.
