Golden Plains secures two grants to support active and healthy communities

Media Release

Golden Plains Shire Council has secured two key grants of $100,000 and $10,000 to support our community’s health and wellbeing efforts.

Council has secured $100,000 from the Victorian Government’s Country Football and Netball Program 2018-19 for the redevelopment of the Bannockburn Victoria Park netball courts, and a $10,000 VicHealth Exploration grant from the Innovation Challenge grant program.

The $100,000 Country Football and Netball Program grant will support a full rebuild of two competition netball courts to meet compliance requirements, the construction of a new a warm up court area, installation of new fencing and undercover benches for players and officials and increased storage space. It will also include a court lighting upgrade. The anticipated start date for construction is October 2018.

The VicHealth Exploration Grant will support a project aimed at getting adults to ‘Step over the Sidelines’, and be physically active.

This project will focus on adult inactivity in structured sport, and will focus on a lack of experience playing the specific sport and the skills needed to play. The grant will fund a market research consultant to explore the concept and develop a parent engagement model, which is linked to the physical literacy standards.

Mayor, Cr Helena Kirby, says securing these two grants demonstrates Council’s commitment to advocating for the health and wellbeing of Golden Plains Shire residents.

“It is so important to Council to support physical activity, increase participation rates and improve facilities for our residents. The Bannockburn Netball Court surfaces are not up to scratch and the community expressed concerns about the safety of the facility as well – community safety is paramount to Council,” she said.

“Looking at how we can help our adult residents ‘Step over the Sidelines’ is a great initiative – we know that inactivity is a big problem and we know being active has huge benefits to the participant, beyond just the physical.

“Our Council Plan 2017-2021 includes a Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plan but the whole Plan has a strong focus on community health and wellbeing; these grants support our priorities of increasing healthy eating and active living and supporting connected communities.

“Council would like to acknowledge the State Government and VicHealth for their support with these important initiatives.

“They are both exciting projects and we are looking forward to sharing our progress with you,” Cr Kirby concluded.
