As a long-term resident of Golden Plains, I understand how important our roads are to daily life—whether it’s getting to work, moving agricultural goods, or staying connected with family and community.
That’s why road maintenance and upgrades remain a key focus in Council’s 2026/27 Budget. This year, Council is making a significant investment in our transport network, with the majority of infrastructure funding directed to roads and bridges.
With more than 1,700 kilometres of roads and over 130 bridges across the Shire, maintaining this network is a major task—but one that is essential for safety, accessibility and economic activity.
Importantly, this investment translates into real projects on the ground. In 2026/27, we will see upgrades to Wingeel Road and Post Office Road, fresh gravel re-sheeting on Russell Road, and the replacement of Russells Bridge.
These projects reflect a mix of renewal and targeted improvements to address known issues and improve reliability across our network. Alongside these works, Council continues resealing, maintenance and improvement programs across both sealed and unsealed roads. We are also working hard to maximise external funding, including through Roads to Recovery, to stretch every dollar further.
We know road conditions are a top concern for many in our community, and we are committed to steady, planned improvements over time. If you have feedback or would like to raise a local issue, I encourage you to get in touch with Council or contact me directly.
Yours in community,
Cr Des Phelan
