Young people meet an Olympian

Youth

Earlier in October, Golden Plains Shire Council’s Youth Development team hosted an excursion to Blazing Saddles in Airey’s Inlet, where a group of young residents from Golden Plains participated in a 90-minute trail ride through picturesque bushland.

Many of the young people had never ridden a horse before, with some overcoming fear to enjoy a fun, social activity in the great outdoors.

The horse riding activity was followed by a presentation by five-time Olympic aerial skier and Survivor (TV) contestant, Lydia Lassila.  Lydia spoke to the group about her life as an elite athlete, as a women in a male-dominated sport and the challenges she faced plus the importance of self-care and resilience. The group thoroughly enjoyed her presentation and walked away inspired and excited; some even said that they would consider applying to compete in the Survivor series!

Residents can stay informed about youth opportunities by following the Golden Plains Youth Facebook page.
