Golden Plains Shire Council is launching the Super Veggie Four challenge from 22 October, 2022 until 20 January, 2023 to encourage local children to eat three servings of vegetables a day for 30 days.

Children who register to participate in the challenge will receive a Taste the Rainbow placemat, a Choose Water Every Day water bottle and a challenge sheet to keep track of their vegetable consumption throughout the challenge  period. There will also be incentives throughout the challenge period to encourage children to keep on track and stay motivated.

Upon completion of the challenge, participants will receive a copy of the ‘Super Veggie Four’ children’s picture book .

Designed to portray vegetables as fun, exciting, and super, this children’s storybook was shaped by families and children from across Golden Plains Shire and aims to empower community members and shift the public perception of eating vegetables to one that is fun for children. Woven throughout the book are simple tips to help support families to make vegetables fun, rather than pressuring children to eat them.

The Super Veggie Four challenge aims to increase understanding of healthy eating and associated health implications, and to encourage children and families to increase their vegetable consumption by educating them on making healthy choices for a healthy life.

Council is inviting children and families in Golden Plains Shire to register for the Super Veggie Four Challenge at a number of locations across the Shire including:

  • Children’s Week event at Bannockburn YMCA, 132 Milton Street Bannockburn on Saturday 22 October from 10.30am to 12.30pm
  • Children’s Week event at The Well, 19 Heales Street Smythesdale on Thursday 27 October from 11.30am to 1pm
  • Golden Plains Farmers Market, 22 Byron Street Bannockburn on Saturday 5 November from 8.30am to 12.30pm

  • Lethbridge CFA Community Christmas Fete at the Lethbridge Cricket Club, 8 Stephenson St, Lethbridge on Saturday 17 December from 5pm

Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble encouraged children and families to get behind the Super Veggie Four Challenge to shift the perception of vegetables and increase consumption amongst children in Golden Plains.

“The majority of Golden Plains Shire families and children do not consume the recommended five serves of vegetables a day. The Super Veggie Four challenge is an interactive and engaging way to make vegetables an attractive choice for children.

"The Super Veggie Four challenge is not only fun, but there are a great range of incentives to encourage children to register and stay motivated to hit the 30 day goal, with a gift pack on registration, incentives offered throughout the challenge, and a copy of the Super Veggie Four children’s picture book upon completion.”
