State Election Commitments 2022

State Election 2022
Advocacy

Golden Plains Shire Council has been advocating for bi-partisan commitments for valuable community infrastructure in the lead-up to the Victorian State Election on Saturday 26 November.

The new boundaries released in 2021 have placed the majority of Golden Plains Shire townships in three state electorates: Geelong, Eureka and Ripon.

Following the realignment, the Ripon electorate now includes Haddon, Linton, Napoleons, Newtown, Ross Creek, Scarsdale and Smythesdale while the Geelong electorate gained Bannockburn, Batesford, Russells Bridge, Stonehaven and Sutherlands Creek. The Eureka electorate is made up of most of the removed Buninyong District, and includes Inverleigh, Pitfield, Rokewood, Shelford and Teesdale.

Following an election campaign, each electorate receives funding to deliver the promises on the political party who forms government, regardless of the aligned party of the newly-elected member of parliament.

With 56 communities in Golden Plains Shire, State Election commitments won’t reach all the corners of the municipality, but every dollar of government investment that’s secured saves money in Council’s budget. This allows more money to be redirected to improving roads and delivering works in smaller townships that don’t get election commitments.

In line with priority projects, Council was pleased that as of Friday 18 November there have been five election promises announced by the major parties for Golden Plains Shire.

State Election: Ripon Electorate

The Liberal Party announced an election funding commitment to extend the bus network from Ballarat to Smythesdale and Haddon, if the Coalition is elected at the State Election.

The Labor Party announced an extended bus service, Smythesdale to Delacombe via Haddon, which replaced the twice-weekly Ballarat to Snake Valley via Haddon service from Monday 21 November.

State Election: Geelong Electorate

The Liberal Party announced an election funding commitment of $170 million for a Melbourne-style rail network centred around Geelong, offering trips to Bannockburn, Werribee, Colac and Bell Post Hill, if the Coalition is elected at the State election in November.

The Labor Party announced an election commitment of $7.6 million towards a new State Emergency Service (SES) facility in Bannockburn if the Australian Labor Party is re-elected at the State election

State Election: Eureka Electorate

The Labor Party announced an election commitment of $1.5 million towards new female-friendly change rooms at the Don Wallace Recreation Reserve if the Australian Labor Party is re-elected at the State election.

During the election campaign, Council has met with candidates for the Ripon, Geelong and Eureka electorates to advocate for strong commitments for the communities of Golden Plains Shire.
