Safe Disposal of Sandbags

Sandbag Disposal

If you used sandbags over the last few days to protect your home from flooding, it is important that you dispose of them correctly and safely.

Sandbags may be contaminated after use and need to be disposed of safely. Council has established two disposal locations for disposal of sandbags:

  • Corner of McPhillips Street and Moore Street, Bannockburn – between the Bannockburn Skate Park and the railway line.
  • Heales Street, Smythesdale – between The Well and the church (please keep used sandbags separate to the sand)

Please place used sandbags on the ground in these locations.

As flood waters continue to subside, additional sandbag disposal locations will be established. Council will provide updates as these locations are confirmed.

Important tips to consider when disposing of sand bags:

  • Wear sturdy gloves when handling wet sandbags as they can contain chemicals, waste and diseases;
  • Sandbags that have been in contact with floodwater MUST be thrown away; and
  • Contact your local council to find out how to dispose of your sandbag safely.
