Ross Creek keeping history alive

Ross Creek

An important commemorative ceremony in Ross Creek, supported by Council’s 2018-19 Community Grants program, attracted a huge crowd of 150 people thanks to a local resident’s passion and drive, and the community’s willingness to show their support.

The ceremonial event was held on Saturday 18 August at the Ross Creek Recreation Reserve Hall to rededicate 18 newly planted oak trees at Ross Creek’s Avenue of Honour, with just two of the original 20 trees remaining before the replant.

The huge crowd, which included Mayor Kirby and Councillors Phelan and Gilbert, witnessed the unveiling of a new memorial panel that details the 20 soldiers from the Ross Creek area who served in World War I. Rosemary Barnett of the Ross Creek History Group, researched the history of the soldiers and received funding from both Council’s Community Grants program and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs for this project. A huge well done goes out to Rosemary for honouring these servicemen 100 years on.

Geoff Howard, Member for Buninyong spoke on behalf of Minister Eren, Minister for Veteran Affairs, describing the importance of honouring servicemen and women, and thanking the community’s stellar efforts in delivering this event and project.

This history project is a great example of the wonderful things the community can achieve with support from Council.
