Pedestrian Crossing Safety

High Street Crossing
Community Safety

Council is aware of two recent incidents at a school crossing within the Shire, prompting a number of safety concerns by the community and by Council.

Council has also received reports of ongoing issues of motorists’ dangerous behaviour around school crossings across the Shire, including motorists driving through the crossing when the school crossing supervisors are on the road, near misses, heavy breaking and speeding within the 40 km/h school zone.

This behaviour is dangerous and unacceptable and impacts the school crossing supervisors who are passionate about their work, whilst simultaneously frightening children and parents of children using the crossings.

Council’s school crossing supervisors are here to assist children to cross the road safely on their way to and from school, and do a fantastic job working near traffic, providing clear instructions and remaining vigilant at all times. They are highly valued and appreciated in the community by children, families and school staff.

Council wishes to remind motorists that they are responsible for staying attentive while driving and must drive to the conditions of the road, whether there is rain, sun glare, fog or anything else impacting visibility or road conditions.

Council will not tolerate this behaviour by motorists and we strongly advise road users to show care and respect for the lives of school crossing staff and children in the community.
