Opportunities for Golden Plains youth

Youth

There are lots of opportunities on offer or coming up for the young people of Golden Plains.

Youth mental wellness workshops

Council’s Youth Development team is partnering with Ballarat Community Health to deliver mental wellness workshops for parents and students at Bannockburn P-12 College in Term 4.

In the absence of local mental health service providers, parents and students are forced to travel to Geelong or Ballarat for support. In response to feedback from the 2017 Youth Empowerment Roadshow, which indicated that the greatest service of need for young people in our community was mental health, Youth Development is bringing services into Golden Plains Shire to meet the growing need.

Council’s Youth Development team has partnered with the Bannockburn Library to provide coding workshops for young people in Term 4 this year. The eight-week program will be delivered at Bannockburn Library on a Tuesday from 4pm-5pm (primary school) and 5pm-6.00pm (secondary school).

Learning to code allows young people to be creative with technology, develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills, learn about computational thinking, build confidence and have fun whilst being outcomes-focused.

Places are limited to 10 and registrations will be taken through the Library. For more information or to register please call 5281 2367.

Community projects for young and older citizens

Council’s Youth Development and Aged and Disability teams are partnering with Bannockburn P–12 College in Term 3 to deliver a program that connects young and older citizens with their local community.

Members of Council’s Community Based Social Support Program will be matched with Year 8 students participating in the Compass Program (Leadership and Volunteering) who will capture the elderly residents’ life stories. Students will then transform the recordings into a hard copy booklet which will be presented to the elderly residents in the program’s final week.
