Naming of Tarnook Track in Steiglitz

Steiglitz Hay Track
Steiglitz

An unmade track in Steiglitz (Hay Track) is set to be re-named to Tarnook Track, following consultation with Wadawurrung and local Steiglitz residents.

At its Council Meeting on 24 May 2022, Council endorsed the re-naming of the currently named Hay Track in Steiglitz to Tarnook Track and sought approval from Wadawarrung, Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), and the Friends of Brisbane Ranges.

In Wadawurrung and other languages of the Kulin Nation, Tarnook is the name for a wooden bowl or bucket that can contain water, food or hot coals and can be used during smoking ceremonies.

Once the name has been Gazetted by the Registrar for the Office of Geographic Names, Tarnook Track will be a No Through Road and classified by Council as an Unused Road Reserve.

Hay Track has been in existence since the 19th Century and originally led to various mining operations, a farmhouse and sheds. The track is now used by a local Steiglitz resident to access nearby property.
