Keep Recyclables Loose

Keep recyclables loose! Let's get it sorted.
Waste Management

Did you know that recycling in plastic bags can’t be separated or sorted and often goes to landfill?

Plastic bags are a major contaminator in household recycling bins, with many Victorians still putting their recycling in plastic bags.

Recycling in plastic bags cannot be sorted at Material Recovery Facilities because the bags can damage equipment by getting caught in the machines and present a health and safety risk to staff as the contents of the bag are not visible and may include sharp objects.

Placing recyclable items into the bin loose means the materials can be sorted and recycled easily. You can do this by collecting your recycling in a basket, plastic tub or cardboard box and tipping the loose recyclables directly into your yellow-lid bin.
