It's time for girls to Move Their Way

Registrations are now open for Council’s new Move Your Way program for girls in Golden Plains aged 12 to 15 years.

Girls in Golden Plains will have more opportunities to get active with registrations now open for the new Move Your Way program. Designed following consultation with local teenage girls, Move Your Way aims to remove the barriers to getting active and combat physical inaction in girls aged 12 to 15 years.

Move Your Way supports girls aged 12 to 15 years to build confidence, social connections, learn new skills and increase their physical activity levels. The movement program provides a supportive, welcoming and inclusive space for young girls to participate in non-structured, non-competitive physical activity. Girls will be able to participate in activities including yoga, circus skills, roller skating, Ninja Warrior style obstacles and games, as well as football and netball in a safe, non-competitive environment.

The free 8-week program will launch on Friday 18 February with an excursion to Geelong for Ninja Warrior-style activities, followed by a variety of activities offered twice weekly at YMCA Bannockburn Recreation Centre, 132 Milton Street, Bannockburn, until the program concludes with a second Ninja Warrior excursion on Friday 8 April.

The activities will be delivered by a variety of experienced facilitators, including Netball Victoria- and AFL-accredited football coaches. All activities will be suitable for all skill levels, with no experience required to participate. Healthy snacks and goody bags will be provided for all participants at each session, along with exciting prizes to be won.

Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble says Council is excited to deliver a program to ensure girls are empowered to take up physical activity.

“Evidence shows that 92% of Australian teens do not meet the Physical Activity Guidelines of 60 minutes a day, and females are disproportionally represented in this data. Move Your Way provides a variety of activities to suit all skill levels, making it easier for girls to participate in activities they may not usually have access to or may have previously been uncomfortable trying out.

“With innovative activities guided by input from young girls across the Shire, Move Your Way aims to remove the barriers to physical activity they face, creating a safe and inclusive space for all girls to participate. Council would like to thank VicHealth for its support of the Move Your Way program in Golden Plains Shire.”

Registrations are now open for the Move Your Way program. Girls aged 12 to 15 years in Golden Plains are invited to register for any of program’s activities by visiting goldenplains.vic.gov.au/moveyourway. Registration is capped and required for all Move Your Way activities.
