Inverleigh

The Inverleigh Active Youth Space project is one step closer to delivery, with exciting concept plans for the proposed $2.3 million project now available for viewing by the community.

A community driven project, the proposed Inverleigh Active Youth Space will expand and develop the Yerram Yaluk Bun Play Space in Inverleigh to an active recreation and community space, with the upgraded facility to include a new skate park, bicycle pump track, social basketball courts, seating, shade and shelters, alongside lighting and beautification works.

The Active Youth Space designs seek to provide increased opportunities for young people in the growing township of Inverleigh to be physically active, build social connections and encourage positive behaviours.

Following an extensive community engagement process facilitated by the Inverleigh Progress Association, Council has worked with community stakeholders including local young people and families to prepare final concept plans for the Active Youth Space, with the plans now available to view on Council’s website at goldenplains.vic.gov.au.

Following the release of the concept plans, community members of Inverleigh are encouraged to attend an in-person engagement session at Yerram Yaluk Bun Play Space, 1 East Street, Inverleigh, from 4 to 6pm on Wednesday 7 September. Council’s Recreation Team will be available to discuss the plans and provide information on the project.

Community members with questions about the concept plans or the project who are unable to attend the in-person engagement session are invited to contact the Recreation team at [email protected] before Wednesday 21 September, 2022.

A $700,000 funding commitment from the Australian Government for the Inverleigh Active Youth Space has been secured, following bipartisan commitments made during the 2022 Federal Election. In July, Council submitted an application to the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund for $1.48 million, which if successful would complete the funding for this project, alongside a $150,000 contribution from Golden Plains Shire Council.

Consistent with the criteria and objectives of the Growing Suburbs Fund, the project scope has been expanded to include formal sealed car parking, additional concrete paths for accessibility, furniture, planting and landscaping.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble says it’s an exciting step for the project to have concept plans developed.

“The Inverleigh community have done a fantastic job advocating for the Active Youth Space project and it’s wonderful to see their ideas come to life in these concept plans. I encourage all community members to view the plans online and discuss the proposed project with Council’s Recreation Team at the engagement session.

“Inverleigh is one of the Shire’s fastest growing communities and Council is pleased to be working alongside them to deliver a purpose-built space for young people in Inverleigh and surrounding towns.

“Council is currently seeking funding from the Victorian Government to support the Australian Government’s commitment and our contribution to make this fantastic local project a reality.”
