Innovation in IT

Community

It’s not often our diligent IT team is in the spotlight; their hard work is very much behind-the-scenes and out of the public eye, but this doesn’t mean their work isn’t outstanding (it is!).

Recently, they received a High Commendation in the Innovative Management Initiative category at the LGPro 2018 awards for their GIS Shared Services Project.

The project sees Brimbank City Council’s GIS department managing the day-to-day GIS services for Golden Plains Shire Council, which means Council does not need its own full-time GIS Officer.

A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyse, manage, and present all types of geographical data. It’s a vital system in local government.

The project shows great cross-collaboration and removes barriers to make a shared service arrangement work between two very different councils. The project could easily set a benchmark for future delivery of shared services and also prove to the Local Government sector that a partnership like this can work.

We’ve learned that when two willing councils want to collaborate, share and save costs, the sky is the limit.

Golden Plains Shire Council is committed to innovation and looks forward to developing more innovative and collaborative projects that save costs.
