To celebrate Get Online Week, Council is set to a deliver a range of events at the Digital Hub in Smythesdale for the community and local businesses.

Get Online Week is an international digital inclusion campaign organised by Good Things Foundation, to be held from Monday 17 to Sunday 23 October.

To support the community to Get Online, Council has partnered with Geelong Regional Libraries to deliver a free ‘Saving Family Stories’ workshop on Friday 21 October from 10.30am to 12pm at the Digital Hub at The Well, 19 Heales Street, Smythesdale. The workshop will teach participants how they can digitise their family pictorial stories with a scanner and conversion software kit.

Council secured a $1000 grant from the Good Things Foundation, which manages the Australian Government funded Be Connected Network, to deliver the ‘Saving Family Stories’ workshop at the Digital Hub.

The grant funding will also support the delivery of two business workshops, in partnership with Business Victoria that focus on taking businesses on-line and identify pitfalls and cautions in trading online.

The ‘Taking Your Business Online’ workshop will be held on Tuesday 18 October from 5.30 to 7.30pm and the ‘Advanced Strategies to Taking Your Business Online’ workshop will be held on Thursday 20 October from 5.30 to 8.30pm. Both business workshops will be held at Digital Hub at The Well in Smythesdale.

Golden Plains Shire Council Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble welcomed the grant to support Golden Plains residents to get online through the free workshops.

“The events are a fantastic opportunity to reach new people in the community and help people with limited digital skills to expand their knowledge and try something new.

“As we increasingly move towards a digital world, I encourage residents to take the opportunity to digitise their family photos and immortalise their precious memories at the Saving Family Stories workshop in Get Online Week.

“I would also encourage local business owners to attend the business workshops to improve their digital presence and maximise their business potential online.”

Get Online Week sees thousands of local events take place each year hosted by community organisations, giving everyone the chance to find the support they need to improve their digital skills and get motivated to learn more.
