Fire Danger Period 2021/22 Ends

Fire Danger Period Ends
News

The Fire Danger Period ended in Golden Plains Shire at 1am this morning, Monday 4 April, 2022.

While the official Fire Danger Period has come to an end, Council encourages residents to remain vigilant about fire.

If residents are planning to burn off their garden waste pile, they need to make sure they have:

  • Checked the fire danger rating. Do not burn off unless the rating is Low-Moderate.
  • Checked the weather forecast for the day of and a few days afterwards.
  • Registered their burn off at firepermits.vic.gov.au or call 1800 668 511.
  • Notified their neighbours.
  • The means to immediately extinguish the fire.
  • Established a gap in vegetation or fire break of no less than three metres cleared of all flammable material.

There must be enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely and ensure the fire is fully extinguished before leaving it unattended.

Under Council’s Local Law No.1, which was adopted in November 2021 following extensive community consultation, it is an offence to not notify the Emergency Services Telecommunication Authority/CFA of a burn off by contacting 1800 668 511 or https://firepermits.vic.gov.au/notify.

Residents who fail to notify the relevant authorities of a burn off (exceeding the size of a small camp fire) risk the attendance of local CFA volunteers and a $908 fine.

Residents are reminded that they cannot burn off offensive materials, including chemicals, rubber, plastic, petrol, oil, paint, treated timber, furniture or mattresses. To report a pile of these items ready to be burnt, please contact Council at 5220 7111 and speak with a Community Safety Officer.
