Golden Plains Shire Council has developed a draft Fair Access Policy (the Policy) which has been endorsed for public exhibition following the 23 April Council meeting.

This initiative follows the recent introduction of the Fair Access Policy Roadmap by the Victorian Government, marking an Australia-first policy designed to improve access to community sports infrastructure for women and girls.

Starting from 1 July 2024, all Victorian Councils are required to develop and adopt a Fair Access Policy to be considered eligible to receive Victorian Government and recreational infrastructure funding. This Policy aims to ensure that women and girls have equal opportunities to fully participate in and enjoy the benefits of community sports, with fair access to their local facilities.

To support the implementation of the draft Policy, Council hosted two in-person community workshops in Smythesdale and Bannockburn throughout April.  These workshops were designed to assist local sporting clubs, committees of management and peak bodies in understanding the policy and its implications.

Key actions in the draft Policy include promoting equitable access, encouraging and supporting user groups and prioritising those committed to equality.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham encourages local sporting clubs, committees of management, peak bodies and the general community to view the draft Policy.

The Fair Access Policy Roadmap aims to address barriers faced by women and girls in utilising community sports infrastructure,” Cr Cunningham said.

Council recognises the significance of providing equal opportunity in sport for local women and girls, and the draft Policy takes a step forward fostering a more inclusive and equitable landscape across the Shire,” he said.

Most importantly, the draft Policy aligns with Council’s efforts to activate community facilities and provide safe and welcoming access to community sports infrastructure.

Community members are invited to provide comment on the Draft policy from Thursday 25 April to 9am, Thursday 23 May 2024 online at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations; by email to [email protected] or mailed to Golden Plains Shire Council, PO Box 111, Bannockburn, VIC, 3331.

Comments will be considered before the draft Policy is presented for adoption at the June Council meeting.
