The Draft Golden Plains Climate Emergency Plan 2022-2032 (Draft Plan) is on public exhibition, following endorsement by Council at its meeting on 23 August 2022

The Draft Plan provides context to the current and future impacts of climate change on Golden Plains Shire and will guide the work of Council to mitigate, adapt and respond to climate change in the Shire over the next 10 years.

Aligning to the relevant strategic objectives of the Council Plan 2021-2025, Golden Plains Community Vision 2040, and Council’s Environment Strategy 2019-2027, the Draft Plan highlights the strong imperative for Council to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Outlined in the Draft Plan are 48 key actions for Council to undertake across five themes: embedding climate action in Council; resilient and adaptive communities; caring for the land; climate adaptive development; and sustainable transport and travel.

The Draft Plan was informed by extensive engagement with the Golden Plains Shire community, the Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Aboriginal Corporation, neighbouring Councils, relevant stakeholders, Council staff and Councillors conducted earlier in 2022.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble encouraged all community members to make a submission on the Draft Plan.

When Council declared a Climate Emergency in June 2021, we committed to developing a Climate Emergency Plan to put the declaration’s words into actions. Following consultation earlier this year, Council is very pleased to present the Draft Golden Plains Climate Emergency Plan 2022-2032 to the community.

“he Draft Plan is a clear commitment of actions for Council to do our part to mitigate, adapt and respond to climate change, and support the Golden Plains community as we deal with the current and future impacts of climate change on our Shire.

“’d like to thank all of the community members who shared their ideas for the Climate Emergency Plan during the engagement for their valuable contributions. The Draft Plan is now on public exhibition and over the next month, Council hopes that many interested community members will review the Draft Plan and make a submission on this important long-term strategic plan.

The Draft Plan is published on Council’s website and hard copies are available at its Customer Hubs at 2 Pope Street, Bannockburn and 19 Heales Street, Smythesdale.

Community members can make a submission on the Draft Plan from 25 August to 22 September 2022:

Submissions close at 5pm, Thursday 22 September 2022. All submissions will be considered prior to the final Climate Emergency Plan 2022-2032 being presented to Council for adoption at its 25 October meeting.
