Children's Week Celebration in Golden Plains Shire

Childrens Week
Child & Family Services

Golden Plains Shire will celebrate Children’s Week 2023 with a range of activities at kindergartens, child care services and community groups across the Shire.

Adults and children are welcome to join a mindful movement session at the Yerram Yaluk Bun Play Space in Inverleigh on Tuesday 24 October starting at 9.45am. Mindful movement allows us to check in with our bodies and get moving in a way that can help us lower stress, release energy, and strengthen our mind-body connection.

Meredith Community Centre is hosting free Children’s Week Mindfulness sessions for kindergarten and primary school aged groups, as well as a Mums and Bubs session. To book a spot, call 0403 667 840.

Damashii Karate Dojo in Haddon is hosting a Children’s Karate & Self Defence Come & Try Fun Day on Saturday 28 October for children aged 4 to 12 years old. Call 0419 319 411 to find out more.

Bannockburn Library is also offering a range of programs throughout Children’s Week including:

  • Toddler Time – Tuesday 24 October, 10.30 to 11.00am
  • Preschool Story Time – Thursday 26 October, 10.30 to 11.15am
  • Baby Time – Friday 27 October, 11.30 to 11.50am
  • Stories, Stem and Making group activity – 10 to 11am

Golden Plains Shire Council Manager Community Wellbeing Emma Wheatland said Children’s Week was an important opportunity to participate in free family-friendly activities.

“This year we’re embracing the theme ‘children have a right to relax, play and take part in activities they enjoy’ and it’s great to see so many places across the Shire offering activities for Children’s Week,” Ms Wheatland said.

“We encourage everyone to embrace the activities on offer and create some fun and lasting memories.”

Council surveyed children from around the municipality to hear how they like to relax, play and take part in activities. The survey aimed to celebrate children’s voice and learn from our youngest residents about what is important to them. Children from primary schools, kindergartens, family day care programs, play groups and long day care services all took part in the Children’s Week survey and will receive resource packs for participating.

Children's Week is a national celebration that recognises the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children. Children's Week runs from Saturday 21 October to Sunday 29 October 2023, with thousands of Victorian children taking part in the festivities.
