Celebrate Children's Week with Golden Plains

Media Release

In partnership with the Victorian Government, Golden Plains Shire Council is proud to once again deliver an exciting Children’s Week celebration.

Children’s Week is a national event held every year during October, giving families and community members the opportunity to recognise the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children. This year, Children’s Week runs from 19 to 27 October with the theme ‘Children have the right to be healthy, safe and happy’, and will feature events across the country, including in Golden Plains.

As part of the celebrations in Golden Plains Shire, Council’s Child and Family Services team is holding a free community event from 10am to 12pm on Wednesday 23 October at the YMCA Recreation Centre, Milton Street, Bannockburn. Families and children will be able to enjoy a morning full of fun and interactive activities, focusing on healthy eating and active living, including:

  • Urban Upcycle children’s art and craft
  • EdGym sessions
  • Hula hoop fun
  • Vegelicious book launch and activities
  • Story time
  • Bunnings children’s activity
  • Mini movers program
  • Fresh fruit
  • Come and try tennis and soccer

To make this exciting event accessible to families and children in the Shire’s north, Council has organised a free bus from Smythesdale and Rokewood to the event in Bannockburn. Bookings for this bus service are essential, and residents should call 5220 7230 to secure a seat.

Council received a $700 grant from the Victorian Government to support the delivery of this Children’s Week event, and partnered with Urban Upcycle, YMCA, Hoop Sparx, Geelong Regional Library Corporation, Bannockburn P-12 College, Bunnings Warehouse, Leisure Networks, Bannockburn Woolworths, Bannockburn Tennis Club and Bannockburn Soccer Club to ensure a fun-packed program.

Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey says this year’s Children’s Week event is a great opportunity for young families in Golden Plains Shire to have fun with healthy eating and active living activities.

“Council is proud to once again offer an exciting and free Children’s Week event at the Bannockburn YMCA Recreation Centre, this year featuring fun and interactive activities all about healthy eating and active living.”

“It’s fantastic to have funding support from the State Government, and exciting that Council has partnered with so many local organisations and groups to bring this wonderful event together.”

“With transportation available from the north and centre of our Shire, it will be great to see many of our Shire’s children and their families enjoying a fun-filled morning this Children’s Week.”
