Calling All Youth: Nominate Today

Media Release

Nominations are now open for Golden Plains Shire Council’s Mayoral Youth Program 2019-2020.

The Mayoral Youth Program’s Community Impact Awards recognise and celebrate the positive contributions local young people already make to our community, while encouraging new young people to be more actively involved in their communities.

Golden Plains residents, aged 12 to 18 years, who have made a positive impact to an individual, group or the environment will be eligible to apply. At two special award events in 2020, award-winners will receive a framed certificate of achievement and a $50 Officeworks voucher.

Additionally, to be eligible, nominees must also:

  • Have completed their community impact within six months prior to the submission date
  • Demonstrate that the community impact was unpaid, unrewarded or not reimbursed
  • Demonstrate that the community impact had a positive outcome on an individual, group or the environment
  • Demonstrate that the community impact was fair, safe and inclusive
  • Submit their nomination within the nomination period.

Local community groups who support young people to make a positive community impact will also be recognised and regarded for their support and encouragement of young volunteers.

Nomination forms are available online at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/mayoral-youth-program, with hard copy forms available at Council’s Customer Service Centres in Bannockburn, 2 Pope Street; Linton, 68 Sussex Street; and Smythesdale, 19 Heales Street.

Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey says that The Mayoral Youth Program’s Community Impact Awards is a great opportunity to reward and encourage Golden Plains youth to be active community members through volunteering.

“The Community Impact Awards is all about recognising and celebrating the positive contributions young people make to our communities every day.”

“There are many different ways our Shire’s youth can give back to the community. It can be as simple as helping an elderly neighbour walk their dog, joining a community tree planting event, participating in a youth group or helping repaint the local scout hall.”

“I encourage all local young people to give some of their time to volunteer, and to get involved with this great program.”

The Mayoral Youth Program was officially launched by Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey on 29 August at Meredith Primary School. Following a discussion led by the school captains about the new youth program, the Mayor, students, Council and school staff, and parents participated in painting, maintenance and gardening projects at the school, before enjoying a BBQ lunch.
