Art Program for Golden Plains Youth

Youth Art Program
Youth

Young people in Golden Plains are invited to join Golden Plains Shire Council’s inaugural Youth Art Program which will be held in Smythesdale over four weeks, beginning Saturday 16 July.

Participants of the free Youth Art Program will be guided by local artist, advocate and volunteer, Barry Wemyss, in the creation of their own ‘art book’ as an expression of their own vision and interpretation of what art can be. Participants will also create a ‘wall hung’ art piece to be displayed in an exhibition that will officially close the Program.

Barry is a passionate and vocal advocate for the arts and has been a member of the Strategy Community Reference Group, contributing to the development of Council’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Strategy. Barry has facilitated art programs across the community, including in school programs with great success.

The Program will include four sessions to be held from 9am to 12pm at The Well, 19 Heales Street, Smythesdale, each Saturday for four weeks from Saturday 16 July.

Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble said the Youth Art Program is a fantastic opportunity for young people in Golden Plains to participate and be guided by acclaimed local artist and community leader Barry Wemyss.

“Barry is leading Council's very exciting and inaugural Youth Art Program, which will provide an outlet for young people to develop their own perspectives and ideas and explore them in a safe and supportive environment.

“This program will be held in Smythesdale, making it easily accessible to young people in the north of the Shire. I look forward to seeing the art books and art pieces that the young people create as part of the Program.”

The Program has a maximum capacity of 15 participants and participants must be able to attend each of the four sessions. To register visit goldenplains.vic.gov.au/events or find out more information, contact Council’s Youth Development team at 5220 7111 or [email protected]
