Amendment to rezone Bannockburn Shire Hall

With the pending completion of new Council Chambers as part of the Golden Plains Community & Civic Centre, Golden Plains Shire has prepared Amendment C88gpla to rezone the Bannockburn Shire Hall whilst protecting its heritage.

At its July Ordinary Meeting, Councillors agreed to begin the rezoning process of the land at 12 High Street, Bannockburn from Public Use Zone 6 Local Government (Local Government) to Commercial 1 Zone. This amendment is to ensure the Shire Hall can continued to be maintained and utilised once its use as a Council Chambers ceases with the opening of the Golden Plains Community and Civic Centre in 2020.

The land affected by this rezoning currently contains the Shire Hall, a war memorial commemorating fallen soldiers from WWI and WWII, and a small playground.

Commercial 1 Zone was determined to be the most appropriate zone for the land at 12 High Street, as it is surrounded by land contained in the Bannockburn Plaza and is on a prominent site on Bannockburn's main street. Once rezoned, Council will likely lease the building for use as small-scale commercial operation such as a café, which is sensitive to the heritage values of the building.

This rezoning amendment process will not result in the removal of the heritage controls, which currently exist on the site, and will allow the continued use of the commemorative forecourt, playground and war memorial as publically accessible spaces.

The Amendment is now on public exhibition until Wednesday 23 October, 2019. For more information, call 5220 7111 and speak with Council’s Strategic Planning Team.
