Addressing community questions about the Inverleigh trees

Community
Inverleigh

Council has received some enquiries from the community about the future of a number of old trees in Inverleigh; these include historic Cypress, Eucalyptus, Pine trees and other species spread across the Inverleigh township.

It is important to note that Council understands the importance of these trees to the community. We also appreciate the heritage of this vegetation, and the significant biodiversity of these trees. At the same time, as a local government organisation, our highest priority is community safety.

While Council understands and appreciates the environmental and social importance of the trees in Inverleigh, there are concerns about the safety risks some trees pose on motorists and pedestrians, which is why signage was placed in the community about potential removal works.  We have also met with the Inverleigh Progress Association and concerned residents about the state of the trees and possible actions that may need to be taken.

In recognising the significance of the trees to the community, and taking the safety issues into account, Council will soon be undertaking an independent arborist’s report, which includes a detailed review of the trees on the Road Reserve between Phillips Road and Common Road, Inverleigh. This report will provide an up-to-date, individual assessment of each trees’ health and provide specialist recommendations and actions Council needs to manage to ensure ongoing long-term community safety and amenity. Once there is a clear understanding of the health of each tree, we will develop a plan detailing the actions that are required and make sure the community is kept informed.

Inverleigh residents will soon have the opportunity to have their say on the Streetscape Masterplan for Inverleigh, which will provide design solutions that are aligned with the community’s vision for the township. The Masterplan will allow for protection of trees, and parking thereunder as well as redevelopment of the service road (and more!). Community engagement will soon commence, so please keep an eye out for more information. Updates about the Inverleigh trees will be provided throughout the Streetscape Masterplan engagement process.
