The Golden Plains Shire Health and Wellbeing Team is a partnership initiative between Golden Plains ShireCouncil, Ballarat District Nursing & Healthcare, Barwon Health and Ballarat Community Health.
Funded by the Department of Health, the Health and Wellbeing Team has a commitment to working in partnership to enhance and promote the overall health & wellbeing of individuals and communities across Golden Plains.
The key priorities for the Health and Wellbeing Team include:
- Promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Building healthy communities through increased physical activity and good nutrition
- Improving capacity building through evaluation and partnership development.
What Do We Do?
The Health and Wellbeing Team provide a range of activities and services from four main community hubs. These are:

Walk to School
Walk to School is a VicHealth initiative which many local councils across Victoria apply and receive funding from to deliver local Walk to School activities and active travel initiatives in their communities.The Health and Wellbeing Team works with schools in the Shire to develop initiates to support active, healthy lifestyles for children and families in Golden Plains Shire.Visit www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au for more information.
Heart Foundation Walking
Heart Foundation Walking is a network of free community based walking groups led by volunteer organisers. The Heart Foundation Walking Area Coordinator for Golden Plains Shire can provide assistance to establish new walking groups or support any existing groups across the Shire to recruit walkers or plan walks with other groups. Physical activity opportunities
Health and Wellbeing staff work with partners and the community to identify opportunities to help people get more active across the Golden Plains Shire. Some of the programs and projects that the Health and Wellbeing team are delivering or partnering with others to provide currently are Branch into Music, Steady Feet, Sporting Schools, Nature play, @ the heart, Walk to School, and Trailblazers.

Our Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan "Healthy People - Healthy Places" sets the overarching framework for all of the policies and partnerships that must be in place if people in the Shire are to enjoy good physical and mental health in great communities. This includes information on a variety of topics including mental health, diabetes, men's health, relationships, and available health and community services.
