This June and July, Council is partnering with local partners, Hesse Rural Health, integratedLiving and Meredith Community Centre to run a series of ‘Winter Harvest’ activities, in Meredith, Dereel and Rokewood.
Accessing and sourcing fresh, affordable produce in Golden Plains has its challenges, which townships in the centre of Golden Plains Shire often experience to a greater degree, than community members who reside in suburbs closer to Ballarat or Geelong. These difficulties related to availability of fresh produce ultimately make eating vegetables more difficult.
Directed by a recent G21 regional consultation, the ‘Winter Harvest’ initiative has an overarching focus on ‘Growing through to Cooking’. The program is designed to increase access to local fresh produce, and provide opportunities for families and children to be exposed to ‘all things vegetables’.
The Winter Harvest will pilot initiatives, such as an ongoing produce stall in Dereel; engage with local partners and suppliers (community groups, Grampians Central West Waste Resource and Recover Group, Woolworths, Raw Foods, Bunnings); and explore opportunities, which can be expanded on a larger scale in suitable locations, in partnership with existing community groups.
The Winter Harvest list of activities includes:
- composting,
- gardening,
- cooking sessions,
- urban upcycle, and
- free fresh produce and soups!
