About
Council is preparing a new Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan (2027–2037) to guide how we work with the community and road safety partners to reduce road trauma and create safer roads, streets and townships across Golden Plains Shire.
The strategy will help identify priorities and actions over the next 10 years to improve safety for all road users, including drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists. It will align with the Victorian Road Safety Strategy and focus on reducing fatal and serious injury crashes across the municipality.
One life lost on our roads is one too many. That is why it is important our community comes together to be actively involved in shaping and supporting a road safety action plan that keeps everyone safe.
On average, there are three fatal crashes and 70 serious injury crashes on roads in Golden Plains Shire each year, with most occurring on high-speed rural roads. While crash data helps us understand where and how crashes occur, local knowledge is essential in identifying road safety risks, behaviours and opportunities for improvement.
Why are we seeking feedback?
We want to hear from residents, road users, businesses and visitors about road safety challenges and opportunities across the Shire. Your feedback will help us identify:
- Local road safety concerns and risks
- Opportunities to improve road safety infrastructure
- Community priorities for future investment and action
- Areas where road safety education and awareness could be strengthened
- Actions that will help make roads safer for all users
Community feedback will help shape a practical and community-supported Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan that aims to halve fatal and serious injury crashes over the next decade.
Key areas of focus
The strategy will explore opportunities to:
- Reduce crash trauma on high-speed roads through infrastructure improvements
- Upgrade connector roads and intersections to support growth
- Improve safety and liveability on residential streets through speed management
- Make motorcycling safer
- Improve safety for people walking and riding in townships
- Support safer road user behaviour through education and awareness initiatives
Your input will help ensure the strategy reflects local experiences and priorities, creating safer and more connected communities across Golden Plains Shire.
Whats next?
Following the consultation period, community feedback will be considered as part of the development of the Strategy. Council will keep the community informed on its progress.
