The Bannockburn Splash Park is seasonal, opening 9am to 9pm, 1 December to 1 April annually during summer months, as supported by Council. The park is outdoors and is most suitable to enjoy in warm weather and when daylight hours are longer.
The summer opening ensures alignment with warm weather peak demand, ensures user and community safety, helps manage staffing and operational costs, reduces environmental impacts and allows for essential maintenance. Visitor numbers drop significantly as the weather becomes less favourable and less frequent and as daylight hours are shorter, making it economically unviable and challenging to keep the water play elements open for a longer season. The summer season also protects our community’s safety by ensuring the facility is not in use when conditions are unsafe or unsuitable.
The maintenance and operating costs of opening the water play features for an extended season are costly and inefficient as splash parks are managed to the same standards as public swimming pools, under health regulations. The seasonal closure also allows for thorough cleaning, essential maintenance, repairs and water conservation.
Environmentally, the splash park uses large volumes of potable water and operating pumps, filtration and disinfection systems is energy intensive. Although smart controls, water recycling and recirculating filtration systems have been installed, an extended season can place a strain on available municipal water supplies in our drying climate, increases water waste and energy consumption and ultimately impacts our carbon footprint.
The off-season is used for comprehensive inspections of all components, safety checks, repairs or replacements which are undertaken to extend the lifespan of the park equipment and comply with health requirements. Regular maintenance also minimises the potential for closures during the opening season and ensures a clean, safe environment for visitors when the park reopens.
The Splash Park maybe closed due to various reasons including weather conditions, safety concerns, and maintenance works. For example, the Splash Park may close on days of poor weather or excessively windy conditions to ensure the safety of users.
