Women invited to Take the Lead

Community

Former Australian Netball Captain Sharelle McMahon is coming to Golden Plains Shire to inspire women to ‘Take the Lead’ in local sport.

Council has partnered with the Golden Plains Rural Women’s Network to run this special women’s leadership event, taking place on Wednesday 10 October, 6.15pm-8.45pm at the Lethbridge Recreation Reserve (Stephenson Street, Lethbridge).

Email us today to book your seat and don't forget to bring along your sport-loving friends and family: RSVP to [email protected].

Council seeks to engage local women in a conversation about ‘taking the lead’ in their local sport setting. We want to know what can be done to support, build capacity and the confidence of women to be active members on local sporting committees and boards, take on coaching roles and drive local initiatives within their club that support and encourage women and girls to participate in active sport and recreation.

This is a fantastic opportunity for local women to be empowered by one of Australia’s netball greats and kick-start a local movement that inspires women and girls to take the lead.

Bookings are essential and it’s free to attend; please email [email protected].

About Sharelle McMahon

Sharelle is one of Australia’s greatest and most recognisable athletes. She first played netball at the age of seven and has since become one of Australia’s greatest representatives in the sport. Since debuting for Australia in the 21/U team in 1996, Sharelle has successfully captained Australia more than 100 times throughout her career. Furthermore, Sharelle’s appearances for Australia have been accompanied by great success including Gold in the World Championships in 1999, 2007 and 2011 as well as gold during the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games. Perhaps Sharelle’s finest international career accolade was the captaining of the Commonwealth Games side in 2010 as well as being the country’s prestigious flag-bearer.

On a national level, McMahon played for the Melbourne Phoenix for 11 seasons, winning five championships. She then went on to play for the Melbourne Vixens in their inaugural 2008 season and further, won the Trans-Tasman Title with them in 2009. Not only did McMahon achieve such success, she was also awarded the Vixens’ MVP for 2009 and 2010.

Following her retirement in 2013, Sharelle is still involved in the netball world, making regular commentary on the Nine Network and devoting time to keynote speaking.

In 2016, Sharelle was inducted into the Sports Australia Hall of Fame.
