Walk to School Month October 2018

Child & Family Services

Every October, VicHealth’s Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school kids to walk, ride or scoot to and from school. It’s a great way to help students learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, every day. It also encourages primary schools, local councils and communities to make active travel easy, safe and accessible.

Along with the health benefits, walking to school has benefits for the whole community. It reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and even saves the environment!

Last year, 759 primary schools across Victoria took part in Walk to School, with 140,303 primary school kids walking more than 1.6 million kilometres during October (the equivalent of walking two return trips to the moon!). Last year in Golden Plains Shire, all 14 primary schools registered to participate in the Walk to School program, over 20,000 walks were conducted and 1,320 students got involved! It would be great if we could make the 2018 program even more successful!

Council's involvement

Council will work with local participating primary schools to deliver a range of activities encouraging more families to walk to school thanks to funding from VicHealth. Activities we're running include:

Competitions

  • 20 x $50 Rebel sport vouchers up for grabs for students at participating primary schools
  • 1 x $250 Rebel sport voucher for a registered school
  • Spot prizes

Fruit

  • Delicious, fresh fruit will be provided to participating schools via two healthy morning teas for students and staff.

It’s easy to get involved!

Getting active is even more fun when we do it together!

Please note: if you can't walk the whole way to school, why not try parking the car 1km or so from school and walk, ride or scoot the rest. You can also walk at home or walk at school.
