Upgraded Playground Reopens In Haddon

Media Release

Haddon’s Centenary Lions Park Playground is back open for local children to enjoy following its recent upgrade.

As part of Golden Plains Shire Council’s plan to upgrade six playgrounds this year, works were completed in late February on the playground at 30 Racecourse Road, Haddon. The $64,000 upgrade of the popular site included replacing the old swings with a new Birds Nest combo swing unit, installing a stepping trail of rocks and balancing logs, re-staining of the main combo unit, and replacing one of the old slides. Other works included replacing the soft fall material, expanding the playground’s footprint and installing new perimeter edging.

The upgrade of Haddon Centenary Lions Park Playground was fully funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. Council received $240,455 from Round One of the program to upgrade the playground, as well as three others in Dereel, Linton, and Garibaldi. The Dereel playground upgrade was completed in January, and works will start in Garibaldi later this month, while planning is underway for the Linton playground upgrade. In the program’s second round, Council secured a further $250,000 to overhaul Enfield’s Harrison Reserve Playground, which is currently in the planning stage.

Mayor Cr Helena Kirby visited the upgraded playground and said it was a great result for families in the Haddon area.

“With a great local primary school, Haddon is home to many young families who I’m sure will welcome the news that the Centenary Lions Park Playground is back open and better than ever. The playground now has a new exciting swing set, slide and natural balancing elements to keep local kids and their families in our Shire’s north entertained.

“Playgrounds are one of Council’s most popular and well-loved facilities, particularly in our smaller communities, and Council is so pleased to be able to deliver upgrades to playgrounds in Haddon, Dereel, Linton, Garibaldi and Enfield this year thanks to funding from the Australian Government.”

Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan said the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program continues to support local jobs, businesses and boost the economy during COVID-19.

“I commend Golden Plains Shire Council in using this funding stream to improve the quality, accessibility, and amenity of their play spaces.

“The playgrounds improve the quality of life for local communities and visitors to the region, encouraging play, access to nature and liveability and have lasting economic and social benefits."
