Sunday 16 October is Sustainable House Day

Environment

The 2016 Sustainable House Day program is the best and biggest ever, including two houses in Golden Plains Shire!

There are 14 properties opening to the public across suburban Geelong, the Bellarine and Golden Plains Shire, showcasing a diverse range of older and modern homes. All homes display sustainable or local materials with an emphasis on recycling and upcycling.

The two Golden Plains Shire homes open to the public are:

  • House 13. 2430 Midland Hwy BANNOCKBURN 1-5pm
Sage Choice Farm, 2011 architect designed 7+ star timber home with local limestone overlooking Moorabool Valley, farm animals, composting & kids farm tours - ethical farmer, builder and composting expert onsite. Sage Choice recently won the 2016 Geelong Business Excellence Award for Sustainability.
  • House 12. 1-5pm, 100 Faulkner Rd, INVERLEIGH 1-5pm
New 8 star family home, off grid solar & power monitoring, wood heater, sustainable/local materials and solar experts onsite.

Not sure where to start? There will be homes to explore if you are interested in:

  • planning to buy or build a new home
  • looking to renovate an existing home
  • wanting to install solar, go off-grid or gas-free
  • seeking practical DIY retrofitting advice, or
  • just love exploring edible or native gardens!

At many of the locations, you’ll find architects, builders, renewable energy experts and permaculture/gardening gurus providing conducted tours and sharing their expertise. Most properties have edible gardens or orchards and many also have chickens and the two farms also have ducks and other animals.

Houses (1-6) located in suburban Geelong will open from 10am to 2pm while properties (7-14) on the Bellarine and surrounding region will open from 2pm to 5pm.  A gold coin entry applies for adults per house, with accompanied children free.
