State Government Plastic Bag Ban Starts 1 November

Waste Management

The State Government is introducing a ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags from 1 November 2019.

From next month, plastic shopping bags with a thickness of 35 microns or less will be banned. This includes degradable, biodegradable and compostable plastic shopping bags.

The State Government’s ban applies to all retailers, regardless of size or type, including supermarkets, greengrocers, bakeries, pharmacies, clothes stores, restaurants, cafes, markets, and food outlets.

It will be illegal for:

  • A retailer to supply a banned plastic bag
  • A person who supplies or manufactures plastic bags to give false or misleading information (or withhold information) about banned bags.

Businesses with unused bags covered by this ban still in stock on 1 November, will be unable to provide these to customers.

Golden Plains Shire Council encourages residents and businesses to get ready for the upcoming ban. When heading into town for the grocery shop or bakery, remember to bring your own reusable bag or container, and support our local businesses as they prepare for this change.
