Golden Plains Shire Council has been successful in its application for $250,000 in State Government funding for the Inverleigh Netball Court Upgrade project.

The grant is part of the Victorian Government’s Female Friendly Facilities Fund 2018-19, which aims to help local clubs and organisations to develop grounds, pavilions, courts and lighting to enable more women and girls to participate in sport and active recreation.

The funding will be supported by a Council contribution of $125,000, demonstrating Council’s dedication to supporting health and wellbeing activity in the Shire.

The project includes the construction of two new fully compliant local competition standard netball courts with court lighting to competition standard.

The new courts will replace the two existing courts which have been identified as unsafe and non-compliant in the G21 AFL Barwon Football and Netball Regional Strategy.

The project is expected to be complete by May 2020.

Cr Helena Kirby, Mayor, says this funding demonstrates a positive shift.

“It is fantastic to see that government funding is backing up the positive global conversation about encouraging more women to participate in sport and recreation,” she said.

“The Golden Plains Shire Council Plan 2017-2021 includes a strategic direction of ‘Promoting healthy and connected communities’ and Council is right behind the push for increased female participation – it’s great to see that the State Government is too.

“Council would like to thank the Victorian Government for their support.”
