Star Volunteers: Terry and Lindy Allinson

Community

In the lead up to Volunteer Week (21–27 May), Golden Plains Shire Council will be sharing information about some of the Shire’s amazing volunteers who embody this year’s Volunteer Week theme, ‘Give a little, change a lot’. The volunteers we are profiling have given so much more than a little; the underlying message of the theme is that often small efforts (in the grand scheme of things), can yield significant positive change.

Terry and Lindy Allinson selflessly volunteer for the Back to Steiglitz Association, which seeks to preserve the history of, and promote, the small historic town of Steiglitz. The efforts of these two volunteer superstars make them more than worthy of recognition.

While the pair have done a great deal for Steiglitz, a recent effort was particularly standout. In March 2018, Terry and Lindy coordinated a group of keen volunteers for a special Eucalypt Australia event, held at the beautifully preserved historical cottage, ‘Suggs Blacksmith’s Cottage’. The purpose of the event was to increase appreciation for the rich cultural and environmental features of Steiglitz, and Terry and Lindy achieved just that. Around 60+ visitors arrived by bus for lunch before a guided tour of the area, conducted by Lindy.

Proceeds of the Eucalypt Australia event will feed into the relocation of the historic Steiglitz State School from a secluded location into a more prominent spot within the township. This is a major project, and one that means a lot to Steiglitz and the Golden Plains community.

Coordinating and managing events like this involve lots of planning and attention to detail, and require commitment and dedication. Lindy and Terry volunteered their time to make sure the event was well-organised, seamlessly delivered and fun for all the participants, and Golden Plains Shire Council is very grateful.

Terry and Lindy are shining examples of Golden Plains Shire volunteers who give back to their community; their efforts make Golden Plains Shire a better place.

National Volunteer Week is the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers.
