We are delighted to announce that Golden Plains Shire Council will again partner with the Western Bulldogs Football Club to offer the innovative Sons of the West men’s health program this March in Smythesdale.

Sons of the West is a free 10-week health program that involves easy-to-access activities aimed at improving awareness and general health levels in men. Local men, aged 18 years and over who live, work or recreate in Golden Plains Shire, are invited to participate in this fantastic and life-changing program.

There are no boot camps or marathons; the program avoids strenuous, rigorous activities and focuses on education, participation and light exercise. Sons of the West helps men live healthier, eat healthier and get back in the game of life.

Originally run in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Golden Plains Shire Council is again one of several regional councils participating in the program. Last year, Sons of the West was a huge success in the Shire, with 23 men taking part in the Smythesdale program and 19 men officially graduating (see pictured). Stories from the local participants indicate that the program changed their lives in a positive manner and inspired them to make sustainable lifestyle changes.

Sons of the West will help participants to:

  • Increase physical activity and build fitness
  • Increase healthy eating
  • Better understand family violence and violence against women
  • Better understand anxiety and depression.

Program participants will also have access to giveaways and emerge with valuable new friendships and a new appreciation for life and healthy living.

The 10-week program will be run at the Woady Yaloak Recreation Reserve, Heales Street, Smythesdale, starting Tuesday 20 March, 7-9pm. No pre-registration is required – just turn up on the night.
