Shelford-Mt Mercer Road Upgrade Complete

Media Release
Mount Mercer

Drivers through Mount Mercer are now benefitting from a safer drive following the completion of the $1.1 million Shelford-Mt Mercer Road upgrade project.

A total of 3.5 kilometres of Shelford-Mt Mercer Road was upgraded as part of the road safety project, with the road’s shoulder widened and sealed between Grahams Road and Rices Road. Works also included installing guard fencing on the east side of the road, improvements to delineation and the replacement of damaged signs.

One of Council’s several road upgrade projects in 2021, the important safety upgrade was fully funded by the Australian Government’s 2020-21 Black Spot Program. Works began in January 2021 and were completed at the end of June 2021.

Mayor Cr Helena Kirby said Council was pleased to have delivered another important road safety upgrade of one of the Shire’s important roads.

“It’s great to see another Black Spot project completed in Golden Plains, with 3.5 kilometres of Shelford-Mt Mercer Road now upgraded with a wider shoulder, guard fencing, improved delineation and new signage. Council had an impressive list of road and bridge infrastructure projects at the start of 2021, and its pleasing to have ticked Shelford-Mt Mercer Road off that list.

“With more than 1,700 kilometres of Council-managed roads, we are always grateful for funding support from the Australian Government through its Black Spot Program to be able to deliver road upgrades for our communities like at Shelford-Mt Mercer Road.”

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan MP announced funding for the road upgrade in August 2020 under the Black Spot Program.

“The Morrison Government and Golden Plains Shire Council have worked together to deliver this upgrade to the Shelford-Mt Mercer Road. This investment is part of our Government’s commitment to building safer roads right across our region.

“The Morrison Government is committed to keeping our communities safe and I will continue to work hard to deliver for our community.”

Works are continuing on a number of other road and bridge projects in Golden Plains Shire, including the replacement of Slate Quarry Road Bridge, Russells Bridge Road upgrade, Meredith-Shelford Road Stage 2, and guardrail replacements in 12 localities.
