Northern Settlement Strategy: Your Questions Answered

Media Release

At its Ordinary Meeting on 23 April 2019, Golden Plains Shire Council adopted the final Northern Settlement Strategy, following extensive community engagement with residents in the north of the Shire.

With a finalised plan in hand, Council Officers will be holding two drop-in sessions for the community to ask questions or seek information about what the Strategy directions mean for them. These sessions will be held at Linton and Smythesdale, and will both take place next Monday 27 May:

  • 3 to 4.30pm at Linton Customer Service Centre, 68 Sussex Street, Linton
  • 6 to 7.30pm at The Well, 19 Heales Street, Smythesdale

Council encourages all residents with remaining questions about the Strategy to attend one of the sessions. Residents unable to make these sessions can contact the Strategic Planning team at 5220 1711 with their questions.

The Northern Settlement Strategy is a high-level strategic framework which directs future growth in the north of the Shire. The Strategy’s framework connects the objectives of State planning policy with Council’s township structure planning process.

The Northern Settlement Strategy:

  • Accommodates an additional 2,000 people in the north of the Shire by 2030.
  • Supports infill development in Smythesdale.
  • Identifies the need for a new Structure Plan for Haddon.
  • Supports the investigation of land for greenfield development within close proximity to the City of Ballarat.
  • Provides guiding principles for how development should be considered.
  • Provides a framework for how growth will be accommodated.

The implementation of the Northern Settlement Strategy will see the principles and directions incorporated into the Golden Plains Planning Scheme, by way of a planning scheme amendment.
