Partnership to promote dental health for young children

Child & Family Services
Smythesdale

The President and members of the Scarsdale Country Women’s Association presented oral hygiene packs to the local Maternal and Child Health nurse Irena Kempski on Friday 22 July at the Smythesdale Maternal and Child Health Centre.

The oral hygiene packs, consisting of a toddler friendly toothbrush and low fluoride toothpaste, will be given to 18 month old toddlers when they present for their 18 month ‘Key age and stage’ visit in the north of Golden Plains Shire. This project will last for two years.

Baby teeth are important as they help with eating, speech, and guide the eruption and position of permanent teeth.

Mayor, Cr Des Phelan, says Council is passionate about supporting good health in our youngest residents.

“The Maternal and Child Health Service aims to promote healthy outcomes for children and their families and oral health is a very important aspect of child health and wellbeing.”

“This initiative will encourage parents to brush their children’s teeth morning and night to reduce the prevalence of tooth decay in young children.”

“It’s also great that the packs were purchased locally, so not only will families be supported in developing good oral hygiene, but local business is also seeing a benefit.”

About the Smythesdale CWA:

The Smythesdale CWA currently has 12 members including two juniors and welcome new members to their branch.

The Scarsdale Branch, formed in 1989 has met regularly at the Scarsdale Hall on the second Wednesday of every month. They discuss local and national issues, decide where their focus for fundraising might be best directed and enjoy fellowship with a like-minded group of ladies. It's a melting pot of ideas and education where they share knowledge and experience of community, craft and a variety of issues as our members cover a diverse age group.
