NAIDOC Week 2020: Always Was, Always Will Be

General

Join Golden Plains Shire Council this week in celebrating NAIDOC Week 2020.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.

This year’s theme is Always Was, Always Will Be, which recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for more than 65,000 years, including in our local area.

Throughout the week, Council will be sharing information on its website and social media channels on the Wathaurong and Eastern Maar traditional owners of the land that is now Golden Plains Shire, and Council acknowledgement and celebration of reconciliation and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in its services.

Do you know what NAIDOC stands for?

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.
