Maternal and Child Health celebrates 100 years

Child & Family Services

Council is delighted to celebrate 100 years of Maternal and Child Health in Victoria. The first Baby Health Centre, as it was then known, opened in Melbourne in response to concerns from community members about unacceptably high infant mortality rates.

Today, the Victorian Maternal Child Health service includes free regular check-ups and health support for children at key developmental stages up to the age of six, and provides advice and support to mothers and families at this important time of life.

Local government is the primary service provider around the state, in a 50:50 funding partnership with the State Government.

Maternal and Child Health in Golden Plains

Within Golden Plains Shire, Council operates a Maternal Child Health service in Bannockburn as well as at six regional centres across our Shire on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

In 2016, Council carried out 2,366 'Key Age and Stage' consultations with Golden Plains' families, as well as around 450 additional consultations.

The '100 Years of Maternal and Child Health' centenary offers an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of local nurses, who play an essential role in guiding families as they welcome children into the world and negotiate those important first steps.
