Introducing Our Regional Youth Representatives

Media Release

Three local young people from Golden Plains have been selected as the Shire’s representatives for the Regional Youth Voice program.

Golden Plains Shire Council is pleased to announce Alisha Nurnaitis, Kaitlyn Schurmann and Rachel Kaiser have been selected and have already begun participating in the program, which is a partnership between Golden Plains Shire, City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire and Colac Otway Shire.

Alisha, Kaitlyn and Rachel will join nine other young people aged 15 to 20 years from the G21 region in the free program, where they will receive leadership training and networking opportunities. The program is being held across five online meetings from late June to December 2020, where participants will connect with each other, discuss issues and opportunities that impact young people and provide recommendations to groups such as councils regarding the views and opinions on young people.

Alisha Nurnaitis says she is excited to meet the other participants and help shape the region’s youth programs.

“I wanted to be involved in the Regional Youth Voice program because I would love the chance to be able to share my ideas with others like me and be able to improve the region’s youth programs to above what they already are. I can’t wait to meet new people and learn new things.”

Kaitlyn Schurmann put her hand up to join the program to ensure the voice of young people in her area is heard.

“I wanted to be a part of this program so that I can give a voice to all the young people who live in my area. I am excited to be able to work with other young people to discuss and problem-solve issues important to us.”

Rachel Kaiser is looking forward to the opportunities and connections the program will bring.

“I am excited to be a part of this opportunity to meet new people who are as passionate about fostering a sense of change and diversity within our youth community.”

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey congratulated the three locals on being selected for the program.

“Congratulations to Alisha, Kaitlyn and Rachel on their well-deserved selection as our Shire’s representatives to the Regional Youth Voice program.”

“The Regional Youth Voice is a unique and influential platform to amplify the voice of young people in our region. This exciting program is a valuable opportunity to collaborate and connect with youth, develop new skill sets and influence decisions that affect young people.”
