Improving Safety For She Oaks Bridge

Media Release
She Oaks

Drivers will experience safer travel across the Sharp Road Bridge in She Oaks thanks to new warning signage.

Golden Plains Shire Council welcomes Tuesday’s announcement from Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle MP that the Victorian Government will provide Council with $17,360 from the Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program to install flashing warning signs at the bridge.

The project will see solar powered LED warning signs installed at the approaches to the single-lane Sharp Road Bridge as it crosses the Moorabool River in She Oaks. The signs will improve driver awareness and compliance through sensing approaching traffic and providing drivers with extra warning of oncoming vehicles. The project is funded by the Victorian Government’s contribution and $10,000 from Council.

The installation of the warning signage will add to the significant safety improvements Council has already completed in the area in recent years, including the $1.6 million new Coopers Bridge on Meredith-Steiglitz Road and $1.485 million widening of 3km of Maude-She Oaks Road that were both completed in 2020, as well as the upcoming $2.3 million replacement of the nearby Slate Quarry Road Bridge in Meredith. This latest project is supported by the local Maude-She Oaks-Steiglitz Community Planning Group.

Mayor Cr Helena Kirby welcomes the funding for this important road safety upgrade.

“The installation of new warning signage on the Sharp Road Bridge in She Oaks is great news for the local community and I thank the Victorian Government for supporting this important project.

“The local community in the Maude, She Oaks and Steiglitz area are active campaigners for increased road safety along the Moorabool Valley’s many bridges, and Council is pleased to be able to partner with the Government to deliver a safer crossing on Sharp Road.

“In recent years, Council has delivered more than $4 million in improving the area’s roads and bridges, including the replacement and upgrade of Coopers Bridge on Meredith-Steiglitz Road and widening of Maude-She Oaks Road. Works will also get underway next week on the replacement of the Slate Quarry Road Bridge just upstream from both the Sharp Road and Coopers bridges.”

Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle MP announced the $17,360 of funding from the Victorian Government’s Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program, which supports small-scale local transport initiatives and innovative transport solutions across the state.

“The road is used by around 18,000 vehicles per day, including a high number of heavy vehicles. Having radar-operated LED warning lights will help all users, particularity those unfamiliar with the area.

“It will give people much more notice of the need to slow down and let oncoming cars and trucks through.

“We’re supporting this project through our Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program, which funds small-scale initiatives that have a big positive impact on local communities.”
