Golden Plains Shire Council welcomes last week’s $250,000 funding announcement from the Victorian Government towards the Bannockburn Skate Park upgrade.

On Thursday 29 October, Minister for Crime Prevention Natalie Hutchins announced Council was one of 17 municipalities to receive a grant from the Community Safety Infrastructure Grants program towards safety works at the facility.

The $350,000 project will rejuvenate and upgrade the Bannockburn Skate Park and address public safety and security issues at the site and in the wider precinct. The project will incorporate a safe, accessible and modern design to maximise site usability and ownership, while supporting local economic activity.

New skate elements including ramps and jumps will be installed, as well as a shade shelter, drinking fountain, rock bollards, bicycle locking stands, bag storage and safety signage. Resurfacing of the existing concrete slab, with landscaping and electrical works will also be included as part of the project.

The remaining $100,000 for the project will come from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program – Round One grant of $1,333,655 that Council received earlier this year.

The Bannockburn Skate Park upgrade joins a list of projects that Council has completed or planned to benefit the Shire’s youth in recent years. In September, the Victorian Government committed $271,032 towards the Golden Plains Shire Youth Hub to be built at the Bannockburn Recreation Precinct. The project is also funded from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program grant, as well as from Bannockburn & District Connected Communities and an in-kind contribution from Council. In 2019, Council was pleased to open the upgraded Smythesdale Skate Park in the north of the Shire, which was a partnership project between Council and the Victorian Government.

The Community Safety Infrastructure Grants are part of the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program.
